Invisible rows after failed syncronization

Publisher: SQL Server 2000 SP4
Subscriber: SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition

Sometimes, after a failed merge replication(due to communication error) some rows on the subscriber became invisible for the publisher.

I've reproduced a case:

[START Short Version]
All rows inserted between a comm failed sync and a fine sync became invisible.
This seems to be caused because the subscriber keeps generating rows with the same generation number and the publisher doesn't look for this generation anymore.

I could code a system that checks all the publication tables and updates all the last generation rows in case of communication error but i would really like to avoid doing it.

I don't know if I'm missing something or if this is a bug or a known issue.

This is a big problem for me because communication errors on cellular phone based connection are quite common and users keep working even if there's an error.

Any comment will be appreciated.Finally, I've modified my replication process solve this manually.

On a normal case (no previous error):
1. I get the current generation (__sysMergeSubscriptions.LastUploadedGen+1)
2. Launch a normal sync.
3. If it fails I save the failed generation for using it on next sync.

On the previous error case:
1. Do a normal sync (to get a valid __sysMergeSubscriptions.LastUploadedGen)
2. Do a dummy update on all rows (from all published tables (from __sysMergeArticles)) that __sysIG or __sysCG equals the wrong generation number.
3. Do a normal sync to send all the invisible rows to the publisher.

I don't like my own solution, but that's the only way I have to keep the system working as I haven't find any reference to this problem anywhere.|||

I just have few questions to narrow downt he problem point in the whole path of sync components.

In the same above scenario, can you please also let me know the contents of __sysMergeSubscription and
__sysMergeSubscriptionProperties table for that subscription in each of the above STEPs (esp. Steps 4 to 6)?

Basically, I just want to know which of the following is true (after a failed sync)

1) Client did not enumerate the changes and hence did not send the changes

2) Client has enumerated the changes, sent the changes but metadata does not say its new change

3) Client has enumerated, sent the changes, metadata also says its a new change, but publisher ignores it for some internal
reasons like publisher metadata says its a false change ...etc

There are no changes on __sysMergeSubscriptionProperties so I will put it just one time.

4171a971-b963-a541-300a-0b1602902e39|||Can you open a case with CSS please for this? That way we can get a better handle on this in a timely manner.|||My workaround runs pretty well and I don't have time now for spending hours and hours crossing mails and test results with a support service.

If anyone can help with the previous data, it'll be welcomed but I won't spent more time testing and logging for this issue. I've lots of work and not many time.

invalied length parameter passed the substring function

Does anyone know what the above error message means?What length did you pass to substring?|||What do you mean, what length...|||From the SQL Server Books Online (a.k.a. BOL):

SUBSTRING
Returns part of a character, binary, text, or image expression. For more information about the valid Microsoft SQL Server data types that can be used with this function, see Data Types.

SUBSTRING ( expression , start , length )

EDIT: Oh, most likely you have code that's deriving the length..post the code and we can figure it out...

InvalidReportServerDatabaseException RS 2000

After upgrading to SP2, I get the following errors while tying to access the report server:

The message would indicate that i need to run some scripts that possibly did not get run during the SP2 upgrade? I am running RS with a remote database.

Not sure why your database wasn't upgraded. That is supposed to happen automagically.

You should be able to generate a script with the RSConfigTool.exe that you can then run on the database manually.

Run RSConfigTool.exe

Choose Database Setup

Choose Script ...

Choose the appropriate values

Invalid XML Elements found inside cync block

I'm receiving the following error when attempting to execute an
updategram using SQL 2005 and SQLXML 4.0

It should be noted that if I use concurrency on the Name attribute, it
works as expected. However I would prefer to use a timestamp - it's
the timestamp that seems to be the big proverbial pain in the arse.
I can't seem to find any solutions online regarding this problem... any

I changed my UpdateStamp value to be something like 0x000000000000101A
and the updategram worked as expected. However this doesn't make any
sense, because SQL 2005's FOR XML EXPLICIT returns the timestamp value
in a 12 character format such as "AAAAAAAADUw=", not in the above
format.
Am I missing something, or is this a bug in SQLXML 4.0 / SQL 2005? How
is it that SQL 2005 can emit a timestamp value in that "AAA..." format,
but it can't accept it? Do I have to do some type of conversion on my
client side after I receive the timestamp value from sql server?

invalid value for 'table' on 'relationship'

I'm using sqlxml3.0 to load a schema file. I cannot, for the life of me,
figure out why I keep getting this error message "-2147467259 Schema:
invalid value for 'table' on 'relationship'".
If anyone can offer the path to a solution it would be most appreciated.

Invalid Udate SQL statement DOES NOT cause error... Does anyone know why?

Here's my update statement:

UPDATE Item1
SET reviewloop = 1, currentreviewstate=5
WHERE itemid in
(SELECT itemid FROM Item2)

The thing is: the table Item2 DOES NOT HAVE a field called itemid.
So, I should receive an error, right? Not so.Instead, every single
record in Item1 was updated.

Does anyone know why SQL Serverr does not trown an error?

column within the subquery is assumed to reference a column in the outer
query. If in doubt, use the two-part column name including the table

I've just tried this myself, and whilst it didn't give any error, it
didn't update any rows in Item1 either. This makes sense, because
the subquery is simply evaluating to FALSE, so 0 rows are updated in

The problem isn't to do with *values* it's to do with resolution of *column
names*. Substitute the word "column" for "value" and your statement
describes exactly what SQL does.

Assuming the column Itemid doesn't exist in Item2, the UPDATE statement you
posted is equivalent to:

UPDATE Item1
SET reviewloop = 1, currentreviewstate=5
WHERE Item1.itemid IN
(SELECT Item1.itemid FROM Item2)

As long as there is at least one row in Item2, every row in Item1 should get
updated.

--|||Any field reference in a sub query will always look for the field internally
first and if not found it will look in the outer query. The reason for this
behaviour is that the sub query can use values from the outer query as
selection criteria, in case statements etc.

This is not a bug, it is by design. By always using table qualifiers in all
sql it will never cause a problem even if the developer mistypes a field
name.
Sloppy SQL (without proper table qualifiers etc) may behave funny as in the
example provided by the OP.

Also, if you look at the execution plan for this and similar queries it will
be more clear why. The optimizer usually turn sub queries like this into
joins.

Invalid Target name - how can it be determined?

Hi, I am sending a message to an invalid target name. The message eventually gets back to the initiator as an error type message. How can I determine the exact cause of the error - and determine that the target service name is invalid? I am using the ServiceBrokerInterface and the Message does not tell much - it seems. Also, in the sys.conversation_endpoints table, the record associated to the message only says 'Error', but no other indicator.

I found it - it is embedded as a stream in the Body property.|||

Right, the cast the response Error message_body to XML and the text will contain the problem service name.
