Invoking SQL Server JOB created for a report schedule

Hi,
Instead of runing a report through the schedule that I have created, I am invoking the SQL Agent Job that has been created for the schedule of the report, using the system stored procedure sp_startjob. Is this a recommended approach? Are there drawbacks for this approach?
Subash

This is a perfectly reasonable solution. If you are just trying to fire a subscription you could also use the FireEvent method to invoke the subscription.

The only drawback is that this is not a supported scenario, which means the job could change in a SP or new release, however this seems unlikely.

Invoking an assembly before a report is rendered

Hi All,
I want to implement a sort of licensing policy for the reports
developed by me. For this I have created my own custom assembly. I
want to invoke the assembly just before the report is rendered so that
I can check if the license is valid and then allow the report to be
rendered, else a default page.
Thanxs in anticipation.You might want to check out this section in BOL (OnInit):

Invoking a batch file from Report

Hi !

I have to invoke a batch file (.bat) when an ad-hoc report is executed. I've currently written a .Net code for invoking (using System.Diagnostics.Process) the batch file. The rdl file calls the method.

When I run the report from Report Designer the batch file is getting executed. But if I deploy it in the Reporting Server and run the report through Web Interface the batch file is not getting executed.

Looks like some security issue. Can someone provide a solution for this?

Thanks.

Where did you place the batch file ? All commands executed either in Script or custom code or executed on the server not on the client.

Jens K. Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de

|||Just a suggestion on how to execute the .bat file. Could′t you use a SQL Agent job instead and call sp_start_job from a dataset in the report?|||

Hi Jens,

Thanks for the reply.

I placed the batch file in the server. I also moved the code (to invoke a batch file using System.Diagnostics.Process class) to a VB.Net dll and tried invoking the function from the rdl. The function is not getting invoked. I also added SecurityPermissionAttribute to the class. Is there any other Security permission that needs to be added for the code to be accessed.

Please find below the sample:

Public Shared Function fnRunSPX(ByVal x As String, ByVal y As String, ByVal z As String, ByVal w As String)

Dim Pro As New System.Diagnostics.Process

Dim Elog As New System.Diagnostics.EventLog

If Not Elog.SourceExists("BillingDateBatch") Then

Elog.CreateEventSource("BillingDateBatch", "Application")

End If

Dim EventLog1 As New System.Diagnostics.EventLog

EventLog1.Source = "BillingDateBatch"

EventLog1.Log = "Application"

EventLog1.WriteEntry("Success", System.Diagnostics.EventLogEntryType.SuccessAudit)

Pro.StartInfo.FileName = "C:\\batch.bat"

Pro.StartInfo.Arguments = x + " " + y + " " + z + " " + w

Pro.Start()

Pro.WaitForExit()

End Function

Even the evenlogging (present in teh above code) does not happen. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Invoke or detect Print Report event

Hi
I'm not sure if this is possible, but hoping that someone out there can
give some guidance.
I'm using a reporting services ReportViewer object to view reports via
an ASP.NET application. I've just upgraded to SP2 to make use of the
print functionality.
However a requirement i have is that a particular report can be printed
only once. Is there a way that i can tap into the Print Report button
event so that i can detect if the print button has been clicked?
Or alternatively is there a way i can invoke the print method from
within ASP.NET aplication?
Or maybe there is some other way to do this....all suggestions
welcome!!!!!!!
Many many thanks in advance
Cheers!!!!There is no way to do this that I know of. And what counts as once? What if
they open up IE again and view the report again? How would you know that it
is the first or second time?

They should be able to view it as many times as they want, therefore
coming out of IE and back in again would be fine. Essentially once
someone had clicked on the print button it would go back to the DB to
say that the report has been printed, thus locking it for anyone else.
If this sounds bizarre, its due a requirement from an external company
that only one print out should exist. There is a 'duplicate' function
which gives the user access to print the same report again, however the
word 'duplicate' would be splashed over to signify it is not the
original
So are you saying there's no way for me to detect the print function
has been invoked?
Thanks

have to be via script and I just don't know. From RS perspective it is just
another rendering request for the report. What about exporting to PDF?
Unless you turn off exporting to PDF (which cannot be done by report, only
for the complete server) then all the user has to do is export to PDF and
print (which is what my users used to do before they adding printing).

Invoke a call for a report in VB2003

We just updated to SQL2005 and all it entails. I've made a report,
deployed it and published it on the web reportserver. My question is,
how do I call it in a VB2003 application? I know how to migrate the
apps in the new "DTS". I can find all the info I need on VB2005, but
we didn't upgrade to that. I need to be able to print this report
during our down time. So, if calling it in 2003 isn't an option, is
there anyway I can schedule the report to print. I see scheduling, but
that's just to compile the report, not print it(unless I'm missing
something). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!Printing is client oriented in both RS 2000 and RS 2005. No difference
between these two. What you could do is schedule a job to render to a file,
pdf format and then have an app monitoring the directory, picking up the
file and printing it.

Tanks,

Camsoft77

what about with two table controls that are identical except the "Original"/"Copy" difference?|||

urbancenturion,

My question is how i can create two pages or more, with same information but change for example 1 parameter.

I need build a report to create Invoice. with 3 copies of invoice.

Att,

|||

>>I need build a report to create Invoice. with 3 copies of invoice.

The best way to do this is with a cartesian join added to your "real" query.

For example, the following will create three rows for each real table row, with an extra column called "invoice_info", properly ordered so the "original" shows up first, in case that is important to you <s>:

Code Snippet

select sales_no, invoice_info from orderheader join

(select 'ORIGINAL' as invoice_info, 1 AS invoice_order

union

select 'COPY1',2

union

select 'COPY2',3

) xx

on 1 = 1

order by sales_no, invoice_order

.. now put a group on your invoice # (or sales_no, in my example) or whatever you want in your report...

Invicible Sub report for generating shared variables

Hi!

Im creating a report with a manual running total in a main report. As a condition to the running total, Im having a sub-report in the details section bringing a shared boolean variable back to the main report.

My problem is that I dont want the sub report to be visible. Have tried suppress it, but then the shared variable isnt brought to the main report correctly.

Please advice me!

Regards,
KarlSuppressing the report doesn't stop the execution of the report.
Show the code that you are using or screen shot.|||Suppress all sections of the subreport; the formulas etc. within it will still run. In the subreport's properties (right click it in the main report) choose suppress blank subreport. In the main report, choose suppress blank section.|||Hi!
Thanks for fast reply.

I've uploaded a screenshot of the report. When showing the sub-report, I'm getting the shared variables back. But if I suppress the section of the sub-report, the sub-report or un-select the can-grow flag, I'm not getting any share variable back (i.e. it's false).

Have anyone seen this behaviour before?

B.R
Karl|||If you suppress the subreport it doesn't run. That's why you suppress the sections within the subreport and suppress both a blank subreport and a blank section containing the subreport. It then still runs, but nothing is displayed.|||Yea, that works!
Thanks alot, you saved my day/week/job... :)

Karl

Invert Rows and Columns in Tables

The message would indicate that i need to run some scripts that possibly did not get run during the SP2 upgrade? I am running RS with a remote database.

Not sure why your database wasn't upgraded. That is supposed to happen automagically.

You should be able to generate a script with the RSConfigTool.exe that you can then run on the database manually.

Run RSConfigTool.exe

Choose Database Setup

Choose Script ...

Choose the appropriate values

InvalidReportParameterException using Data Processing Extensions

We have a report that runs via the data processing extensions. Running this
report from the reporting service interface or via the web is fine.
However, we have a requirement for running this report via some very
speciifc schedules. To achieve this we are programatically rendering this
report. We supply three paramters for this to run. The report runs a stored
procedure to obtain a list of valid periodIds. We pass it a valid period id
(can be found in the list) however, we get the error message below.
Any pointers greatly appreciated.

It turned out that the problem was one of case sensitivity.
The IDs we were dealing with were all GUIDs. Some of the lists were
uppercase, some were lowercase. As the comparison does not happen in our case

Hopefully, any problem you have is just as simple.

I'm getting this all of a sudden on a report that previously worked for me.
I uploaded a new RDL after putting in a new graphic and adding a couple of

Invalid Semantic Model

Hello

While following the instructions on the tutorial "Creating a Report Model Based on an Analysis Services Cube", I got this error when trying to create the report model:

The semantic model is not valid. Details: The element 'Entity' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/10/semanticmodeling' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'IdentifyingAttributes' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/10/semanticmodeling'. (InvalidSemanticModel)

I have tried to use a SSAS cube of my own, which is working fine and tried to create a model based on it so I can create ad-hoc reports.

Parameters chosen on the data source creation:

Connection Type: Microsoft SSAS

Connection String: Data Source=localhost\SQL2005;Initial Catalog="TAP Analysis"

Connect Using: Windows Integrated Security

To SSAS using the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, I use Windows Authentication.

In the model creation, I have tried to switch to other credentials, but the error still remains... Can you help me with this one?

Thanks

Andr

I have the solution.

After the opening of the case in microsoft, this problem was analysed by the support teams and I got an answer today.

The problem seems to be one relationship i've built between a fact table and a dimension table.

In the current release of SSRS and SSAS, a relationship from one entity to another is implicitly to the key of the destination entity.

I was using a Time dimension (the dimension key was "day") and I was building a relationship based on the attribute "month".

So, the relationship was ignored and my fact table had no relationships and therefore, no identifyers, and that was the cause of the problem.

The solution for my case was relating the month to the first day of the month in the Time table.

I was told Microsoft plans to lift such limitation on the next releases.

Hope this helps for anyone with similar problems

Invalid Report Source

I developed a project with a form one main report and three subreports.

I was able to run this report well in this project.

But if i include it in my main project it throws an error "Invalid Report Source" and my viewer is blank but the "Main Report" tab is there present.

I use dataset as the datasource for my crystal report.
If i use the dataset to fill my datagrid it is giving the value.

So with the situation i understand that the dataset is getting filled and the report is also geting the data. The error comes in the line

RptViewer.ReportSource = Rpt_Doc. '(Report Document Object)

One main thing is i have not used any error handler but the code still continue to work properly without being crashed.

If i give 'Try catch' error handler also i the same error is only prompted.

The main project was first developed in vs.net 2000 and the project was upgraded to 2003.

Will this be the reason for the report being giving the errorI got the solution through one of my friend.

she got it from another friend.

So that was a long chani to get the solution

the solution is

The error message appears because the incorrect versions of the Crystal DLL files are referenced.

To correct this behavior reference the correct version of Crystal DLL files.

Adding the Correct References
----------

1. Open the VS .NET project.

2. In the 'Solution Explorer' window, right-click the 'References' folder and choose the 'Add Reference' command. The 'Add Reference' window appears.

3. Verify the References for all Crystal DLLs are version 9.1.5000. If they are not version 9.1.5000, select the 9.1.5000 version DLLs and click the 'Select' button.

4. Click the 'OK' button.

5. Save and run your application.

If running the application you find the DLLs revert to the version observed prior to your updates, complete the following steps:

Reverting DLLs Back to Version 9.1.5000
------------

1. Right-click the project name in the solution explorer and select the 'Properties' command. The 'Properties' window appears.

2. Under the 'Common Properties' folder, select 'References Path'. The 'Reference Path' window appears.

3. Delete all entries in this window and click 'OK'.

4. Repeat steps 2 through 4 of the 'Steps to Add the Correct References Section'.

Upon completing the listed steps, the application runs and reflects the correct References.

I've restored my report server 2005 from serverA to serverB and
Reporting Services will run and I can access the reports, but the

1) backed up the encryption key on serverA
2) backed up the report server databases on both servers
3) shut down RS on serverB
4) detached the reportserver database on serverB
5) renamed reportserver.mdf and ldf to reportserver.mdf_old and

7) started reporting services on serverB - failed to initialize
8) restored encryption key and then deleted the row from

9) restarted reporting services and the pages displayed
10) accessed the report that I wanted to view and the error above
popped
11) tried deleting and re-creating reportserverTempDB by dropping and

Invalid Object Name Error

I'm trying to create a report model using a set of tables from two different servers. Creating the Data Sources and the Data Source View is no problem, however, while trying to create a Report model I run into an error that says,

An error occurred while executing a command.
Message: Invalid object name 'dbo.table_name.
Command:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM [dbo].[table_name] t

I've checked the schemas for both these tables and they are correct. Why is this error occuring?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm not sure why the error occurs here but I have a found solution around the problem. You can create named queries that Union your tables from your different data sources into one query.sql

Invalid namespace

I'm getting the following error message when I tried to configure Reporting Services in 2005 SQL:

"No report servers were found on the specified machine.

Invalid namespace" Any assistance to get over this hurdle will be appreciated!

We have the same problem. Our reportserver suddenly went down and now shows this problem.

Invalid Directory error message

Hi,

I am a newbie to integrating of asp page to crystal report. Please assist me in what error I am making.

From asp page, I would like to click on "Request Reports" button and it goes to ViewReports.asp

Within ViewReports.asp, I have the following code.

<%@. LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<title>Crystal Reports ASP Example - Displaying a Simple Report</title>
<%
reportname = "wwwroot\aspect\CommissionStatement2006.rpt"
%>

<!-- #include file="AlwaysRequiredSteps.asp" -->
<!-- #include file="MoreRequiredSteps.asp" -->
<!-- #include file="SmartVieweractivex.asp" -->

<%
strPeriod = Request.form("Period")
strReport = Request.Form("crystalradio")

Response.Write strPeriod
Response.Write "<br>"
Response.Write strReport

%>

<HTML>
<HEAD></HEAD>
<TITLE>View Reports</TITLE>

<BODY>
</BODY>
</HTML>

-----

Error I get is:

Error Type:
Crystal Reports ActiveX Designer (0x80043AC4)
Invalid directory.
/scripts/padmaja/AlwaysRequiredSteps.asp, line 56

Now the path of my report is

wwwroot\aspect\wwwroot\aspect\CommissionStatement2006.rpt

Line 56 of AlwaysRequiredSteps.asp is

Set session("oRpt") = session("oApp").OpenReport(path & reportname, 1)

Any ideas.

Thanks.I get this error because my reports are in another directory while my asp pages are in one directory. If I move the CR reports to the same directory as my ASP pages, then it works fine.

But any ideas as to how I can configure my path of the report in ASP pages?

'path of the report is wwwroot\merge\
strReport = Request.Form("crystalradio")
'reportname = "\merge\" & strReport
'Response.write reportname

reportname = "CommissionStatement2006.rpt"

Invalid Descriptor Ind

I am using Crystal Reports 8.0 in Visual Basic 6.0 With SQL Server 7.0.
When I pass the parameters to the report to see the results the following
error message appears
"ODBC Error : [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid Descriptor Index"
Can anyone help me.

Looks like a SQLGetData error

There are a number of restrictions on using SQLGetData. In general, columns
accessed with SQLGetData:
Must be accessed in order of increasing column number (because of the way
the columns of a result set are read from the data source). For example, it
is an error to call SQLGetData for column 5 and then call it for column 4.
Cannot be bound.
Must have a higher column number than the last bound column. For example,
if the last bound column is column 3, it is an error to call SQLGetData for
column 2. For this reason, applications should be careful to place long
data columns at the end of the select list.
