Invoking a SQL Server user-defined function via SQL passed to Informix

==========
Background
==========
My colleague and I are using MS Reporting Services to create reports based upon data extracted from an Informix database. Inseveral reports, we have the need to parse the contents of a variable length field in order to extract a variable lengthforeign key value.

Note that the key value is of variable length and embedded within a string that's also of variable length.

==========
Question
==========
Given the fact that we aren't allowed to add anything within the back-end Informix environment, we wrote a SQL Server userdefined function that can extract a variable length "key" value from a variable length string. My question is as follows:

Is it even possible to invoke a SQL Server user defined function in our SQL statement (passed to Informix) within the context of Reporting Services?

==========
Environment Notes
==========
- We are NOT allowed to add anything within the back-end Informix db environment.

- We are connecting via an Informix ODBC driver with a linked Informix server defined in our SQL Server environment.

- We've tried defining the user-defined function within the "master", "ReportServer" and "ReportServerTempDB" databases with the appropriate permissions set.

==========
Error Messages
==========
We've received the following error message after trying to invoke the SQL Server user defined function:

SELECT field1, field2, field3, dbo.udf_GetStringElement(field3,'/',1,2) AS extrctd

[Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]Identifier length exceeds the maximum allowed by this version of the server.

We receive the following error message after creating a new SQL Server user defined function using a shorter name:

SELECT field1, field2, field3, dbo.gse(field3,'/',1,2) AS extrctd

[Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]Routine (dbo.gse) can not be resolved.

Any feedback would be appreciated,

ndm

have you tried using a custom code function for it ?|||

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "custom code function". The user defined functions I mentioned, "udf_GetStringElement", "gse", are user defined functions that I wrote. It's not one of the "system" functions (e.g. "fn_isreplmergeagent") found in master.

I merely created the function WITHIN the context of the "master" db and eventually within "Report Server" and "ReportServerTempDB" in an attempt to invoke the function within a Report Services SQL statement.

|||By Custom Code function I mean the custom code vb.net functions you canwrite under Report -> Properties -> Code tab. You canreplicate the logic of your user defined function you have in sql intovb.net.
what xactly foes your user defined function do ?
|||

Ah, I understand what you're saying about simply replicating/writing the string parsing/extraction logic within the Report Services environment, but our issue isn't really a (post-data aggregation) formatting problem.

Our SQL Server user defined function parses a variable length string in order to extract a variable length "foreign key" value that we'll need to use for joining data from several Informix tables.

Unless there's another approach of which I'm unaware, I'm assuming that we need to parse this string DURING the SQL execution in order to perform the requisite join(s).

Appreciate the feedback,

ndm

|||I didnt understand the situation completely..you have the SELECT stmt from Informix db but the UDF is in SQL Server right ? does the udf do anything other than string parsing ? looks like its a little complicated and we could be hitting the limitations ( one of the many) of RS.|||

Correct; the SELECT statement (defined within shared Report Services dataset) is passed to Informix and our custom UDF is in SQL Server.

More specifically, I've tried placing our custom SQL Server UDF within several of the SQL Server databases ("master", "ReportServer" and "ReportServerTempDB"). When I attempt to invoke the UDF within the SQL statement passed to Informix, I receive the aforementioned error messages.

The key point is that we need to be able to parse DURING the SQL execution in order to perform some requisite join(s).

Within a pure SQL Server environment, I can access the UDF from master (or, for that matter, any other SQL Server db so long as the appropriate permissions are set). I'm not even sure if what we're trying to accomplish is possible since the SQL statement is being passed to Informix. I was wondering if there was some "Reporting Services" method for invoking our custom UDF defined WITHIN the SQL Server realm.

Again, I appreciate the reply.

ndm

|||

The SQL statement you have is executed on Informix DB engine and it wouldnt understand the SQL UDF..unless you make a specific connection to SQL for which it may not be possible in 1 SELECT stmt..you prbly might need to use a set of stmts..If the UDF is only doing some string parsing I would recommend moving it into RS custom code and rewriting it in vb.net. Cant think of anything else..

|||

I would create a DTS package that is scheduled to get the data from Informix and populate the Reporting Service database. Try the urls below for more info. Hope this helps.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/deploy/infmxsql.mspx#EDAA

Kind regards,

Gift Peddie

|||

Yes, I'm thinking that we may have to take a less directextract+dump+cleanse route (Informix -> MS SQL Server -> MS Reporting Services) for this scenario. We were trying to avoid taking snapshots of the data and having to maintain a secondary (albeit temporary) data store.

Your recommendation merits further consideration.

Thanks for the feedback,

ndm

InvalidReportParameterException using Data Processing Extensions

We have a report that runs via the data processing extensions. Running this
report from the reporting service interface or via the web is fine.
However, we have a requirement for running this report via some very
speciifc schedules. To achieve this we are programatically rendering this
report. We supply three paramters for this to run. The report runs a stored
procedure to obtain a list of valid periodIds. We pass it a valid period id
(can be found in the list) however, we get the error message below.
Any pointers greatly appreciated.

It turned out that the problem was one of case sensitivity.
The IDs we were dealing with were all GUIDs. Some of the lists were
uppercase, some were lowercase. As the comparison does not happen in our case
insensitive SQL Server environment, this caused an issue.
Hopefully, any problem you have is just as simple.
Good luck

invalid reconciler parameter

First of all... thanks for a great and interesting product... this is really nice...

I'm working with a winform app and pushing it out via click-once deployment (using the bootstrapper for SQLCompact as well)... the SQL install is fine, however when my app attempts to do anything with the db, i get an error "invalid reconciler parameter" error... some searching seems to indicate that this could be coming from the path being longer than 128chars... howeve, using click once, i'm not certain I can control the deployment location... I'm certain that there is a work around, but not sure what it is... any guidance?

As a note, running the app on the same machine using the output from VS (not installed via ClickOnce but simply running hte exe) works fine...

Thanks,

Rob

Just to close the loop on this thread... SSCE RTM'd today and this problem does not repro in the RTM bits.

thanks.

|||

I am having exactly the same problem but don't understand your response ? I have installed the latest versions of SQL Compact Edition including SDK, Server Tools, VS Tools and Runtime and I'm still getting the "invalid reconciler parameter" using ClickOnce.

Please help.

|||Rob how did you resolve this issue ?

'Invalid cursor state' error when saving table changes

I've created a small DB (one table so far, 0 records as yet). When I try to
change the table structure via Enterprise Manager, I get the following
error:
/*
05 August 2004 16:02:36
User:
Server: HYPERION
Database: TADB
Application: MS SQLEM - Data Tools
*/
'TANumbers' table
- Unable to rename column from 'AdviceNoteID' to 'AdviceNote'.
ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid cursor state
The actual change I was trying to do worked, or at least it appears to have
done.
BOL suggest that this error might be due to the fact that the DB or the Tlog
is full. With no data an no transactions so far, that is unlikely. Plus EM
reports that there is 8.43 Mb free out of 10Mb!
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Invalid character value for cast specification error

I'm using Access 2K via ODBC to replicated SQL Server 2K. In some tables (not all) when I try to add a record either with a form or directly in the datasheet I get this error message and all form controls/table cells display '#Name?'. The record is added
and displays correctly if I close and reopen the form/table. I can add records with no problem in Enterprise Manager.
Any help gratefully received.

Hi, I am getting exactly the same problem although this problem has only occurred since I implemented merge replication. Does anyone have an answer?

invalid cab file after snapshot via FTP

I was able to successfuly retrieve a snapshot via FTP but the subscriber says
the snapshot .cab within the folder is invalid. What would make the file
invalid?
Jeffrey, this looks rather strange indeed. Which version of SQL server are
you running? Is the cab file marked read-only by any chance? Can you browse
the content of snapshot.cab directly in Explorer? Were there any strange
error messages in the snapshot agent history table? Does the problem go away
if you regenerate the snapshot?

Invaild Object Name

Thanks in advance!

I am in the process of creating a means for users to access data via views using MS Excel. The views I have created "pull" from data in two different databases into a third. I also wanted to use the data as well in some web reporting that I do. The problem I ran into in the web app is that it giving me the following error.

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid object name 'dbo.NVoltHSCLConsolProduction'

What did I miss in creating the views?

Thanks,
leeI assume NVoltHSCLConsolProduction is the name of your view? Can you access it from the QA and EM?

Try taking off the dbo in the reference.|||Yes, NVoltHSCLConsolProduction is the name of the view.

Yes, I can access it from both QA and EM as well as with MS Excel.

I use Dreamweaver UD for web apps and it's query building tool will access it as well.

I tried dropping the dbo, but did not help!|||I am assuming we have some kind of ownership \ permissions issue here. I am not familiar with Dreamweaver UD. What kind of web application is it? Is at ASP, PHP etc... If it is ASP I would check to see if the security context of the IIS web server (the IUSR_... account) has permissions to access the view.|||DW UD is for creating ASP. I have used views in the asp before. However they were views of data in that particular db.|||Sounds like you need to fully qualify your view with a three part name: Select thingamajig
From TheDatabase.dbo.NVoltHSCLConsolProduction|||The reason why you're not getting the error when using the view in EM and QA may be because of the default database setting for the account with which you registerd the server in EM and connected to in QA. Follow Max's advise.

Internet URL Access

I am creating a web appliction to access Reporting Service, but I got some
problem
1. User loges on web application via Forms Authentication
2. User types in report parameters.
3. Program gets all parameters, then call Reporting Server URL to get report.
It works fine with intranet, but it doesn't work with internet, because the
reporting service uses Windows Authentication. I don't want allow Anonymous
access Reporing service.
What should I do?Can you use the RS web service to render your reports? The user can log
into your app as normal, and in your code, you supply credentials (that will
authenticate) to the RS web service and return the report as PDF, etc.
Or you can set the RS up to use Forms Authentication and have your users go
directly there:

Internet reporting

I've recently set up SQL Server 2005 and have implemented Report Services /
Report Manager for users to be able to view reports via our intranet. Many
of the users are remote users, from time to time, and I would like for these
users to see the same reports from the Internet (preferrably being able to
use their same Windows Auth login). Our SQL Server is a separate machine
from our web server, and the current Report Services and Manager is set up on
the SQL Server. Can I set up the Report Manager on either the SQL Server,
web server, or both for users to be able to view reports from both the
intranet and Internet? If so, how? I'd also prefer this to be seamless, so
that the user doesn't know the difference between intranet and Internet
reports (if their is a difference).I suggest you go through this first in your online books
search for "Configuring a Report Server for Internet Access" I think your
problem will be solved after going through this.

many others as well. They did not answer my question and that's why I came
to the newsgroup.

Internet Replication

I am attempting to setup a publication where I'm replicating date between 2
sql 2000 servers via the internet. The snapshots are configured to be written
to ftp to be downloaded by the untrusted subscribers via ftp. I'm having
troubles with not having access to the distributor, this wasnt an issue until
I restricted access to RPC on the firewall seperating the
distributor/publication and the subscriber. The subscribers get the error
'the process could not connect to Distributor <SERVER>'
Is there a way to give access the distributor via ftp (or some other way)
and how is this done?
Do particular types of replication require access to the distributor (can I
get away with no distributor access)?
If I setup up an updating subscription, what is the best way to achieve an
updating subscription over the internet without a vpn?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Internet Merge Replication IIS

Maybe I am missing something here, but it seems like the point of doing Merge Replication via IIS is so that you do not have to expose your DB server directly to the internet (i.e. all your clients), rather you expose a webserver to the internet and the webserver handles the replication keeping your DB server closed to direct internet access and thus keeping it more secure.

However, to set up Internet Merge Replication using IIS a client has to have direct internet access to the DB server as a stored procedure needs to be run on the publisher.

So Internet Merge Replciation using IIS makes it so your DB does not have to be directly exposed to the internet except your db needs to be exposed directly to the internet so every client can execute a stored procedure against it. How does this make sense? Yeah, I can write a webservice or something that gets the SP from the client and executes it against my db server but why should I have to? Why isn't the dll that the "Configure Web Synchronization" wizard puts into place capable of doing this?

Using web sync not only "hide" your sql server from the client, but also extends the merge replication to devices as well as PCs in anywhere that has the internet access. the later is actually the main reason to have this new sync type.

Sure, one can write their own web services to do the sync ( in fact, I believe there are some companies doing that already ), but this will not fully utilize the merge replication's functionalities to the web client subscriptions as it was to the fully connected subscriptions.

hence, the "Configure web synchronization" wizard means to provide some walk throguh steps to help users to set up the IIS server for replication and not to intend to setup the webservices.

thanks

Thank you for your reply, but your reply...parts don't make sense and other parts don't answer what I asked.

>> but also extends the merge replication to devices as well as PCs in anywhere that has the internet access. the later is actually the main reason to have this new sync type.

That is NOT the "main reason" of doing web sync via IIS. Since for a client to do merge synching offsite, they have to have internet access to the sql server location, synching could be accomplished quite nicely without IIS by merely poking the appropriate holes in your firewall to allow the needed direct sql connections to be made. Thus IIS is not what facilitates merge synching over the internet. It still seems to me that the ONLY point of doing merge replication via IIS is to hide your SQL server from direct internet access.

>>Sure, one can write their own web services to do the sync

I never said this. What I said was that to set up Merge replication a client needed direct access to a sql server because a SP (Stored Procedure) has to be run against the Publisher that registeres the subscriber with the publisher. If you are using IIS to accomplish your merge replication, then you do not have your sql server directly exposed to the internet which makes it rather hard for your subscriber to connect directly to the publisher to execute a SP. What I said was that I could write a Webservice that could facilitate the subscriber sending the SP to the publisher but that I shouldn't have to as the replisapi.dll should be doing that. I said nothing about writing a webservice to do the sync, just that as things stand now I would have to write a webservice to facilitate setting up the sync.

So again, it seems like the point of using IIS to do merge replication is to hide your SQL Server publisher from the internet. However, part of setting up a subscriber involves running a SP (Stored Procedure) against the SQL Server Publisher. If your SQL Server publisher is hidden from the internet, it makes it rather impossible for your subscriber to connect to it to run a SP against it. It seems that currently the only work around is to make your own webservice that can access the SP arguments from the subscriber and run the proper SP with the proper arguments against your publisher for you. It seems sort of silly that you would have to set that up yourself, that MS hasn't built that in to something that already exists.

The situation is analguous to the Exchange RPC over HTTPS problem that occured when Office 2003 first came out. RPC over HTTPS allows Outlook to run against an Exchange server without having to have direct port 135-139 access. However in order to set up RPC over HTTPS your computer FIRST had to be able to connect directly to Exchange on ports 135-139 (which was a problem for me since I use Comcast and Comcast blocks these ports). The only work around was to lug my computer into the office, put it on a lan with the exchange server, setup RPC over HTTPS, then take it back home.) MS has since fixed this problem. However, this seems like the exact same problem. Doing merge replication via IIS makes it so that clients do not have to connect directly to the SQL Server, however to initially set up each client, that client has to connect directly to the SQL Server. Is there a way around this?

Thank you

|||

Many people may not have ability to connect to publisher directly through port 1433. That is one of the main motivation to support https (port 443) replication. IIS server is needed to understand the https protocol.

|||

Yes, that is right along the lines of what I have been saying.

Why is this so hard to understand? I will try to make it simple.

I have a sql server that is acting as a publisher. This publisher is not directly accessable via the internet. I have set up Merge replication using IIS and https on a server running IIS. The IIS server is accessable to the internet on ports 80 and 443. Ok? Simple enough.

I want to connect a subscriber to this publisher. The subscriber is somewhere on the internet. In order for the subscriber to successfully set up its subscription, it needs to execute the Stored Procedure named "sp_addmergesubscription" ON THE PUBLISHER!

As you so aptly pointed out "Many people may not have ability to connect to publisher directly through port 1433" that being the case, how then is a subscriber supposed to run the stored procedure "sp_addmergesubscription" on the publisher?

|||

You have two choices:

1. Add the subscription at the publisher before subscriber connects. Meaning an administrator at the publisher will need to add this information, not the subscriber since the subscriber does not have access.

2. Connect as an anonymous subscriber. Meaning if subscriber cannot have their subscription added to the publication, then connect as an anonymous subscriber, which will add the info for you on your first connect.
